As a podiatrist my healing starts with the funny looking appendages that anchor, hold, support, root and HEAL us.
Yes I said heal not heel (I love foot jokes!)
You say what is so special about feet. Well, for one just imagine yourself without them. An unfortunate part of my occupation has been to perform foot salvage surgery that sometimes lead to the loss of toes and feet. Unfortunately some even go on to leg amputations. These poor individuals can tell you just how important your feet are.
Within a few minutes of examining feet I can get a pretty good idea of how healthy a person is. Vascular status (pulses in the foot) and toenails are windows into the entire you as well as foot morphology.
Let’s take a look at alignment.
Keeping the foot in alignment will decrease foot pathology including fallen arches, bunions, hammertoes etc.. My belief is the lack of strengthening we give our feet causes our arches to fall and once that happens not only does it affect the foot but knees and hips and backs can pay the price. So what is the solution? going Barefoot? Well I really don’t think that’s an option for most but strengthening intrinsic muscles and tendons can certainly help. I love to recommend yoga for this.
